Questions & Answers about В связи с тем, что на улице идут ремонтные работы, дорога временно закрыта.
How does the phrase В связи с тем, что work mechanically to introduce a reason?
This is a formal conjunction meaning due to the fact that. It starts with в связи с (in connection with), which requires the instrumental case. To connect this preposition to the clause что на улице идут ремонтные работы, we use the demonstrative pronoun то (that) in the instrumental case, making it тем.
Why is the verb идут used with ремонтные работы?
While идти literally means to go on foot, it is standard in Russian to use it for events, processes, or activities that are currently taking place or going on. Here, it simply means the repair work is in progress.
Why is работы plural here when the English translation says repair work in the singular?
In Russian, official or large-scale tasks like construction or repairs are typically expressed in the plural, as in ремонтные работы (repair works) or строительные работы (construction works).
Why does the sentence use закрыта instead of the full form закрытая?
The word закрыта is a short-form passive participle. When a participle serves as the main predicate of a sentence (meaning it tells us the state of the subject, acting like a verb), it drops to the short form. Since дорога is feminine, it takes the feminine ending -а.
