Questions & Answers about Новый метод был разработан в 2023 году.
Why use the passive был разработан here instead of the active impersonal Новый метод разработали?
Using the impersonal third-person plural (разработали meaning "they developed") is the most common way to express this in everyday, neutral Russian. The formal passive construction with a short-form participle (был разработан) significantly elevates the register. It makes the sentence sound like it belongs in a scientific paper, an official report, or a news broadcast.
Since Russian often uses -ся verbs for the passive voice, could I say Новый метод разработался?
No, you should avoid разработался here. Reflexive -ся passives are primarily used with imperfective verbs to show an ongoing process (like метод разрабатывался meaning "the method was being developed"). For a completed, perfective action in the past, standard formal Russian uses the short-form past passive participle (был разработан).
Why is it разработан and not the full adjective form разработанный?
When forming a passive predicate with the verb "to be" (быть), Russian requires the short form of the participle (разработан). The long form (разработанный) is used when the participle acts as an adjective directly modifying a noun within a sentence, such as in the phrase недавно разработанный метод (the recently developed method).
How do I read out loud the year в 2023 году?
You read it as в две тысячи двадцать третьем году. Remember that in Russian compound ordinal numbers, only the very last word declines. The words for "two thousand twenty" stay in the nominative (две тысячи двадцать), and only the word for "third" changes to the prepositional case (третьем) to match году.
