Questions & Answers about Адвокат решил обвинить директора в соучастии.
Why do we use в соучастии here instead of the Genitive case, since English says accuse of?
In Russian, the verb обвинить (to accuse) requires the Prepositional case with the preposition в. You literally accuse someone in a crime or action (обвинить кого-то в чём-то). This is a classic example of the Prepositional of Conviction, where verbs of blaming, suspecting, or convincing take в + Prepositional.
Why does the direct object директора take an -а ending here?
Директор is an animate masculine noun. When it becomes the direct object (the person being accused), it takes the Accusative case. For animate masculine nouns, the Accusative case endings are identical to the Genitive case, which is why we add the -а to make it директора.
What is the root of the word соучастии and how does it translate to complicity?
The word соучастие is built from the prefix со- (meaning co- or together) and the noun участие (participation). Literally, it means co-participation. In a legal context, this translates smoothly to complicity. Because the Nominative ends in -ие, its Prepositional form takes an extra и instead of an е, making it в соучастии.
Could we use the imperfective verb решать instead of the perfective решил here?
