Questions & Answers about Чем скучнее лекция, тем медленнее ползёт время.
Why use the unidirectional verb ползёт here instead of the multidirectional ползает?
Even in metaphorical uses, the core rules of Verbs of Motion apply. Because time is seen as moving linearly forward in one continuous direction, we use the unidirectional verb ползти rather than the multidirectional ползать.
I know we usually say time goes (время идёт). Is using ползёт a common metaphor?
Yes, just like in English, replacing the neutral verb of motion идёт (goes) with ползёт (crawls) is a very common metaphor to emphasize that time is passing agonizingly slowly.
How does the чем ..., тем ... structure work in this sentence?
This is the Russian equivalent of the English "The [more], the [more]" construction. It uses чем plus a comparative word (скучнее), followed by a comma, then тем plus another comparative word (медленнее).
Both скучнее and медленнее end in -ее. How do we know one is an adjective and the other is an adverb?
