Questions & Answers about Идите медленно и не оступитесь, этот холм гораздо выше.
Why does this sentence use the perfective verb оступитесь with не, when negative commands usually take imperfective verbs?
Normally, a negative imperative uses an imperfective verb to forbid a deliberate action. However, when warning someone not to do something accidentally, Russian uses не + a perfective verb. Here, не оступитесь acts as a warning to prevent an accident, meaning "make sure you don't stumble" or "be careful not to lose your footing".
The first command is the imperfective идите (walk). Why do we switch aspects for the two commands connected by и?
The aspects reflect the different nature of each action. Идите is an ongoing, continuous instruction (keep walking slowly). Не оступитесь, on the other hand, is a warning to avoid a sudden, instantaneous accident (tripping). It is very common in Russian to mix aspects in the same sentence to capture these exact nuances.
What gives оступитесь the meaning of "losing your footing"?
The verb is based on the root for stepping, seen in words like ступать. Adding the prefix о- and the reflexive particle -ся to a verb often creates the meaning of "making a physical mistake" or "doing an action incorrectly". So, оступиться literally means to step wrongly. You can see this same "mistake" pattern in ослышаться (to mishear) or опечататься (to make a typo).
Why do we use гораздо here instead of много to say "much higher"?
