Questions & Answers about Он приедет в среду, то есть послезавтра.
Why does the English translation say 'He arrives' in the present tense, but the Russian uses the future tense приедет?
In English, we often use the present tense for scheduled future events like 'He arrives on Wednesday'. Russian is more strict about time: if the event happens in the future, you must use the future tense. приедет is the future tense of the perfective verb приехать (to arrive).
Does приедет mean he is arriving on foot or by transport?
He is arriving by some form of transport (car, train, plane, etc.). приедет is formed from the base verb ехать (to go by transport) combined with the prefix при- (which adds the meaning of arrival). If he were arriving on foot, you would use придёт instead.
Why is Wednesday in the accusative case (в среду) instead of the prepositional case?
In Russian, to say that an event happens 'on' a specific day of the week, you always use the preposition в followed by the accusative case. Because среда (Wednesday) is a feminine noun ending in -а, its accusative form changes to среду.
How exactly does the phrase то есть work here?
то есть translates literally to 'that is' (то = that, есть = is). Just like in English, it is used as a conjunction to clarify, correct, or rephrase what was just said. Notice that in Russian, it must always be preceded by a comma.
