Questions & Answers about Сеанс начинается ровно в восемь.
Why does this sentence use the reflexive verb начинается instead of just начинает?
Начинать (without the -ся ending) means someone starts something else—it needs a direct object. In this sentence, the screening isn't starting something else; it is just beginning. When an event starts, happens, or finishes on its own, Russian uses the reflexive form начинается with the event (сеанс) as the Nominative subject.
Does сеанс only mean a movie screening?
No, it translates more broadly to a session, showing, or sitting. While it is the standard word for a movie screening at a cinema, you will also see it used for a massage appointment, a hypnosis session, or a communication link.
What case is being used in the time phrase в восемь?
It is in the Accusative case. When talking about an event happening at a specific time on the clock, Russian uses the preposition в followed by the Accusative case. For numbers like восемь, the Accusative form looks exactly the same as the Nominative.
Could I put ровно at the end of the sentence to mean eight o'clock sharp?
Russian word order is very flexible, but the phrase ровно в восемь (exactly at eight) naturally sticks together as a set phrase. It sounds much better to keep ровно right before the time phrase it modifies, rather than moving it to the end of the sentence like English does with the word sharp.
