Questions & Answers about У нас никогда не было запасного пути.
Why does путь become пути here?
It is in the genitive case because of the negative possession structure (не было). Путь is a special anomalous noun: it is masculine, but in the genitive, dative, and prepositional cases, it takes the ending -и, just like a feminine noun ending in a soft sign (like тетрадь becoming тетради).
If пути takes a feminine-style ending, why is the adjective запасного masculine?
Because путь is strictly a masculine noun, despite its unusual declension. Adjectives must agree with the noun's true gender. Therefore, the adjective запасной (spare) takes the standard masculine genitive ending -ого, becoming запасного.
Why is the verb было in the neuter form instead of masculine?
When you talk about the complete absence of something in the past using не было, the sentence is impersonal. Because there is no grammatical subject to agree with, the past-tense verb defaults to the neuter form было. The thing that is missing then goes into the genitive case.
Does запасной путь refer only to literal railway tracks?
While it literally translates to a spare track or railway siding, it is very commonly used as an idiom in Russian. Just like in English, it frequently means a fallback option, an alternative, or a Plan B.
