Questions & Answers about Моя мама беспокоится о том, что адаптация очень трудная.
Why do we need о том, что in this sentence instead of just что?
The verb беспокоиться requires the preposition о (about) to express what is causing the worry. However, Russian prepositions cannot attach directly to the conjunction что (that). Instead, we insert the pronoun то as a placeholder object for the preposition. It acts as a bridge, literally translating to worrying about the fact that.
Why is the placeholder word spelled том?
Because it follows the preposition о (about), it must take the prepositional case. The word то is a neuter pronoun, and its prepositional case form is том. In these pointer phrases, the pronoun will always take the case required by the main verb's preposition.
Why does the verb беспокоится have the reflexive -ся ending?
The reflexive ending -ся shows that the subject is experiencing the feeling herself. Without it, the verb беспокоить means to bother or to disturb someone else. Because the mother is the one feeling anxious, we use the reflexive form.
Why do we use the feminine adjective трудная instead of the adverb трудно?
