Questions & Answers about Мы желаем вам успеха в любом деле.
Why use любом here instead of каждом (every)?
The word любой means 'any' in the sense of 'whichever one you choose' or 'no matter which.' The speaker is wishing them success in whatever matter they decide to pursue. If you used в каждом деле, it would mean 'in every single matter,' which sounds a bit more literal and exhaustive. Любой is perfect for an open-ended wish like 'anything you do.'
What case is в любом деле, and why does любой end in -ом?
The phrase is in the Prepositional case because it follows the preposition в (in) to express the abstract location of the success. Дело (matter/business) is a neuter noun, so its Prepositional form is деле. The pronoun любой declines exactly like a standard adjective, so its neuter Prepositional ending is -ом, resulting in любом.
Why is the word for success (успех) in the Genitive case (успеха)?
The verb желать (to wish) requires the Genitive case for the thing you are wishing for. You can think of it as wishing for 'a measure of' or 'some' success. This is a strict rule for Russian well-wishes, which is why you also see the Genitive in common phrases like желаю удачи (I wish you luck) or желаю счастья (I wish you happiness).
Why is the pronoun вам used here instead of вас?
