Question 1

Why is 'сократили' in the past tense if we are talking about a hypothetical present or future?

Accepted Answer

In Russian, unreal or hypothetical conditions always use the particle бы followed by a past tense verb. Even though the meaning refers to a theoretical present or future ('If we were to reduce...'), the grammar rule strictly requires the past tense form сократили because of если бы.

Question 2

There are two 'бы' particles in this sentence. Is that always necessary?

Accepted Answer

Yes! An unreal conditional sentence usually requires бы in both halves. The first бы appears in the condition (если бы мы сократили = if we reduced), and the second бы appears in the result clause (это было бы хорошо = it would be good). Notice how both clauses pair бы with a past tense verb.

Question 3

Why use 'производство пластика' (production of plastic) instead of an adjective like 'пластиковое производство'?

Accepted Answer

To say 'plastic production', Russian prefers using the second noun in the genitive case (пластика) to literally mean 'production OF plastic'. If you used the adjective пластиковое, it might sound weirdly literal, as if the manufacturing process or the factory itself is physically made out of plastic!

Question 4

Why does 'экология' change to 'экологии' at the end of the sentence?

Accepted Answer

It follows the preposition для (for), which always requires the genitive case. Because экология is a feminine noun ending in -ия, its genitive ending changes to -ии, resulting in для экологии.
