Unreal Conditionals (бы)
In English, we talk about hypothetical or "unreal" situations using words like "would" or "were" (e.g., "If we used solar energy, we would save the planet."). These are scenarios that aren't actually happening right now, but we are imagining the outcome if they did.
In Russian, you create these hypothetical statements using the particle бы. You need бы in both halves of the sentence:
- The condition (the "if" part) starts with Если бы.
- The result (the "would" part) also includes бы.
Crucial Rule: The verbs in both clauses MUST be in the past tense, even if you are talking about the present or the future!
| If we used solar energy, we would save the planet. | Если бы мы использовали энергию солнца, мы бы спасли планету. |
| If we recycled plastic, we would save the ocean. | Если бы мы перерабатывали пластик, мы бы спасли океан. |
Clause Order
Just like in English, the result clause can come first, followed by the "if" clause. When the result comes first, the particle бы typically follows the subject or the verb.
| Would the ecology be better if factories reduced emissions? | Экология была бы лучше, если бы заводы сократили выбросы? |
Negation and Possession
To make a conditional negative, simply place не directly before the verb, just as you would in a normal sentence. The particle бы remains separate.
| If we did not pollute nature, global warming would not exist. | Если бы мы не загрязняли природу, глобального потепления бы не было. |
When expressing "if someone had" (literally "if by someone there was"), you use the standard possession structure (у + pronoun). The past-tense verb быть (was) must agree in gender and number with the thing being possessed.
| If we had clean energy, we would solve the problem of global warming. | Если бы у нас была чистая энергия, мы бы решили проблему глобального потепления. |
