Questions & Answers about Бизнесмены часто рискуют деньгами и репутацией.
Why are деньгами and репутацией in the Instrumental case?
The verb рисковать (to risk) governs the Instrumental case. Whenever you risk something in Russian, that thing must take the Instrumental form. You can think of it literally as taking a risk with money and reputation.
Where does the -у- in рискуют come from?
The infinitive is рисковать. Verbs that end in -овать drop the -ова- and replace it with -у- in all present tense forms. This is why we get они рискуют (they risk) instead of рисковают.
What is the dictionary form of деньгами?
The dictionary form is деньги (money), which is a plural-only noun in Russian. The Instrumental plural ending for most nouns is -ами, which gives us деньгами. Note that the spoken stress shifts to the -а- in the ending.
Why does репутацией end in -ей instead of the typical feminine -ой?
The dictionary form is репутация. Feminine nouns ending in -ия always take -ией in the Instrumental case. The standard -ой ending is for nouns that just end in -а in the Nominative case.
