Questions & Answers about Почему в две тысячи десятом году был кризис и падали акции?
Why does the word for year end in -у (году) instead of the usual Prepositional -е?
The word год (year) belongs to a small group of masculine nouns that take an irregular, stressed -у ending in the Prepositional case when used with в or на to show time or location. Therefore, "in a specific year" is always в ... году.
Why do we say в две тысячи десятом году instead of changing all the numbers to the Prepositional case?
When expressing years in Russian, we use ordinal numbers (like "the two thousand and tenth year"). In a multi-word ordinal number, only the very last word changes its case. That is why две тысячи stays in its normal form, and only десятый changes to the Prepositional десятом.
Why is the verb placed before the subject in был кризис and падали акции?
Word order in Russian is flexible. Placing the verb before the subject (like был кризис instead of кризис был) is a common way to emphasize that an event took place or existed. It sounds very natural when setting the scene for what happened in a certain time or place.
Why do we use the imperfective verb падали instead of a perfective verb here?
We use падали (were falling) because the sentence describes an ongoing process during that year. The shares were continuously dropping over a period of time, not just in one single completed action, so the imperfective aspect is needed.
