Questions & Answers about Это мой отец, после свадьбы которого наша семья переехала.
Why is которого placed after после свадьбы instead of right after the comma?
In English, we say "after whose wedding", putting "whose" before the noun. In Russian, when который is used in the Genitive case to mean "whose" (showing possession), it almost always comes after the noun it possesses. So, после свадьбы которого literally translates to "after the wedding of whom."
Is которого in the Genitive case here because of the preposition после?
No, the preposition после (after) forces the word right next to it, свадьбы (wedding), into the Genitive case. The word которого is in the Genitive case because it means "whose" or "of whom," referring back to отец (father). It takes its gender and number (masculine, singular) from отец, and its case (Genitive) from its role as a possessor.
Why does the word for wedding, свадьба, change to свадьбы here?
The preposition после (after) always requires the following noun to be in the Genitive case. Since свадьба is a feminine noun ending in -а, its Genitive form changes the ending to -ы.
Why does the verb переехала (moved) end in -а?
