Learn how to use the relative pronoun который (who/which/that) in the Genitive case to discuss genealogy and family history.
Genitive Forms of "который"
As always, который gets its gender and number from the noun it modifies in the main sentence, but its case is determined strictly by its role inside its own clause.
| Gender / Number | Genitive Form |
|---|---|
| Masculine & Neuter | которого |
| Feminine | которой |
| Plural | которых |
Expressing "Whose" (Possession)
To say "whose" in a Russian relative clause, you literally say "of whom" or "of which" using the Genitive forms of который.
Unlike English, which places "whose" before the noun (e.g., "whose name"), Russian reverses this order. You state the possessed noun first, followed by которого, которой, or которых.
For a masculine noun like предок (ancestor), use которого:
| I am looking for an ancestor whose name I do not know. | Я ищу предка, имя которого я не знаю. |
For a feminine noun like линия (line), use которой:
| This is a family line, the history of which I am looking for. | Это семейная линия, историю которой я ищу. |
For plural nouns like люди (people), use которых:
| We are starting a search for people whose names we did not know before. | Мы начинаем поиск людей, имена которых мы раньше не знали. |
Prepositions That Take the Genitive
Use the Genitive forms of который when the relative clause requires a Genitive preposition, like из (from), без (without), or для (for).
The preposition goes right in front of the relative pronoun:
| We have a family archive, from which I took this document. | У нас есть семейный архив, из которого я взял этот документ. |
| This is a letter, without which we cannot find this record. | Это письмо, без которого мы не можем найти эту запись. |
| This is a difficult search, for which I need to find new documents. | Это трудный поиск, для которого мне нужно найти новые документы. |
If the preposition modifies the possessed noun (e.g., "after the wedding of whom"), the preposition and possessed noun stay together at the front of the clause:
| This is my father, after whose wedding our family moved. | Это мой отец, после свадьбы которого наша семья переехала. |
