Questions & Answers about Это письмо, без которого мы не можем найти эту запись.
Why does который take the form которого here?
Которого refers back to the word письмо (letter). Since письмо is a neuter, singular noun, we must use a neuter singular form of который. Furthermore, it is in the Genitive case because it immediately follows the preposition без (without), which always forces the word after it into the Genitive case.
How can we tell the gender of запись since it ends in a soft sign?
Nouns ending in a soft sign (-ь) can be either masculine or feminine, which can make them tricky to learn! In this sentence, the word эту is a massive clue. It is the feminine Accusative form of эта (this), which proves that запись is a feminine noun.
If эту запись is the direct object, why didn't the word запись change its ending?
As the direct object of the verb найти (to find), the phrase is in the Accusative case. However, feminine nouns that end in a soft sign (like запись, дверь, or вещь) belong to a special noun group. For these nouns, the Accusative case looks exactly identical to the dictionary form. Only attached words like эта change to show the case (becoming эту).
Why use the perfective verb найти (to find) instead of the imperfective находить?
