Why use поехала here instead of just ехала?
The prefix по- added to the directional verb ехать makes it perfective. In the past tense, поехала focuses on the start of the motion. It implies the expedition set off or departed by transport to another region, and they are either still there or currently on their way.
Since they are going to a destination, why don't другой регион change their endings for the accusative case?
They actually are in the accusative case! After the preposition в showing direction, we use the accusative. However, for masculine inanimate nouns like регион, the accusative form is identical to the nominative (dictionary) form. The adjective другой matches this and also stays the same.
How do we know to use the feminine forms наша, научная, and поехала?
