Setting Off
Adding the prefix по- to the unidirectional verbs of motion идти and ехать creates the perfective verbs пойти (to go/set off on foot) and поехать (to go/set off by vehicle).
In the past tense, these focus on the start of the motion—meaning someone set off, departed, or went to a destination.

You will often use пойти and поехать in the infinitive after verbs of desire, or to express the purpose of a trip (often using чтобы).
| We want to go to the scientific base to study the land. | Мы хотим поехать на научную базу, чтобы изучать землю. |
| We have little time to go to this region. | У нас мало времени, чтобы поехать в этот регион. |
Future Trips
Because пойти and поехать are perfective verbs, they do not have a present tense. If you conjugate them using the standard present tense endings, you create the simple future tense ("will go" or "will set off").

Fieldwork and Geology
When talking about scientific expeditions, use these prefixed verbs to describe heading out to a base camp (лагерь) or exploring a cave (пещера) for samples (образец).
