Questions & Answers about Мне нравится самая высокая башня в городе.
How does the superlative work in самая высокая башня?
Why is "the tallest tower" (самая высокая башня) in the nominative case? Shouldn't it be the object since I like it?
In Russian, the verb нравится literally means "is pleasing to". So, the sentence is structured as "The tallest tower is pleasing to me." Because the tower is the grammatical subject doing the pleasing, самая высокая башня stays in the nominative case.
Why is the sentence starting with Мне instead of Я?
This goes hand-in-hand with how нравится works. Since the tower is the subject doing the pleasing, you (the person who likes it) are the receiver of that feeling. Therefore, you must use the dative case мне ("to me") instead of the nominative я ("I").
Why is it в городе and not just в город?
When you use в (in) to talk about a static location, the noun must be in the prepositional case. The prepositional ending for the masculine noun город is -е, giving us в городе ("in the city"). If you used в город (accusative case), it would mean motion into the city.
