Questions & Answers about Первый этап начинается до презентации.
Why does the word презентация change to презентации in this sentence?
The preposition до (meaning "before" or "until") always requires the noun following it to be in the Genitive case. For feminine nouns that end in -ия, like презентация, the Genitive ending is -ии.
Why does the verb начинается end with the reflexive particle -ся? Can I just use начинает?
You need the reflexive -ся because the verb is intransitive here; the stage is beginning itself, rather than starting something else. If you used начинает, you would need a direct object (for example, "The stage starts the process").
Why is it первый and not первая or первое?
Первый (first) is an ordinal number, and it behaves just like an adjective. It has to match the gender and case of the noun it describes. Since этап (stage) is a masculine noun acting as the subject (Nominative case), we use the masculine ending -ый.
Could до презентации also translate to "until the presentation"?
Yes! The preposition до marks a limit in time. Depending on the broader context, it can translate to either "before" or "until" in English, and both would use the exact same Russian phrasing.
