Questions & Answers about Дома тепло, но на улице темно и холодно.
Why isn't there a word for "it" in this sentence, like "это тепло"?
In Russian, impersonal expressions about the environment or weather don't use a dummy subject like the English word "it". You just use the state word on its own: тепло (warm), темно (dark), and холодно (cold).
The current lesson is about using Dative pronouns for states. Why aren't there any Dative words here?
You use a Dative pronoun when describing how a specific person feels, like мне холодно (I am cold). This sentence describes the general environment rather than a person's physical feeling, so no Dative word is needed.
Why is "at home" translated as just one word (дома), but "outside" is two words (на улице)?
Дома is a set adverb meaning "at home" or "in the house." To say "outside," Russian uses the phrase на улице, which literally translates to "on the street" and uses the Prepositional case.
Why do тепло, темно, and холодно all end in -о?
These words are adverbs used to express a state of being. Adverbs that describe weather, the environment, or physical states almost always end in -о.
