Questions & Answers about Мой новый рецепт — без мяса и без соли.
Why does the word for meat change to мяса here?
The preposition без (without) always requires the noun that follows it to be in the genitive case. The dictionary form of meat is мясо (a neuter noun ending in -о). To make it genitive, the -о changes to -а, giving us мяса.
How do we form the genitive case for соль (salt)?
Соль is a feminine noun that ends in a soft sign (-ь). Nouns in this group form their genitive case by changing the soft sign to -и. That is why it becomes без соли.
Why is there a dash (—) after рецепт?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" (is, am, are) is almost always left out. When a sentence connects a subject (рецепт) directly to its description without a verb, a dash is often used in writing to stand in for the missing "is".
Do I have to repeat без before the second ingredient, or could I just say без мяса и соли?
You can absolutely say без мяса и соли! Dropping the second preposition is grammatically correct and very common in everyday speech. Repeating без in this sentence just adds a little extra emphasis to the fact that both of these things are completely left out of the recipe.
