Questions & Answers about Анна решила стать дизайнером.
Why does the word for designer end in -ом (дизайнером)?
Because of the verb стать (to become). In Russian, when you talk about becoming or working as a certain profession, you must put the noun for that profession in the Instrumental case. The dictionary form is дизайнер, and adding -ом makes it Instrumental masculine singular.
Anna is a woman, so why doesn't the word дизайнер have a feminine ending?
Many modern professions, especially those borrowed from other languages like дизайнер, менеджер, or адвокат, do not have an official feminine form. They remain grammatically masculine even when talking about a woman. Notice that the first verb решила still takes the feminine -а ending to match the subject, Анна.
Why use the perfective verb решила instead of the imperfective решала?
Because making this decision was a single, completed action with a clear result. She made up her mind once and for all, so we use the perfective aspect to emphasize that the action is finished.
Why is the second verb (стать) in the infinitive form?
This works just like English: Anna decided (past tense) to become (infinitive). When two verbs are chained together like this, only the first verb (решила) changes to match the subject and tense. The second verb stays in its dictionary form.
