Questions & Answers about В июне лето.
Why is there no word for "is" in this sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" (is, am, are) is usually skipped. So, В июне лето literally translates to "In June summer," but it means "In June it is summer."
Why is June spelled as июне instead of июнь?
Because of the preposition в (in) pointing to a location in time, we use the Prepositional case. The dictionary form of June is июнь (a masculine noun). To make it Prepositional, the soft sign (ь) at the end changes to -е, giving us июне.
Where is the word for "it" in the Russian sentence?
English needs a placeholder word like "it" when talking about weather or seasons (as in "it is summer"). Russian does not use a placeholder word here. You simply pair the time frame (в июне) with the season (лето).
Why isn't the month capitalized in в июне?
Unlike in English, Russian does not capitalize the names of months, days of the week, or seasons unless they are the very first word of a sentence.
