Questions & Answers about Сегодня свободный день.
Why is there no word for "is" in this sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" is almost always left out. You just put the subject and its description side by side. So, Сегодня свободный день literally translates to "Today a free day".
Why is the letter г in Сегодня pronounced like a "v"?
This is a special pronunciation rule. In the endings -его and -ого, the letter г is pronounced like an English "v". The word Сегодня was historically formed by joining сего (this) and дня (day), so it keeps that historical "v" sound!
Why does свободный end in -ый?
свободный is an adjective meaning "free", and adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Because день (day) is a masculine noun, the adjective takes the standard masculine ending -ый.
Wait, день ends in a soft sign (ь). How do I know it is masculine and not feminine?
