Questions & Answers about Аэропорт очень большой.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb 'to be' is almost always left out. You just say Аэропорт очень большой (literally 'Airport very big') and the 'is' is simply understood from the context.
Why does the word большой end in -ой?
Аэропорт ends in a consonant, which tells us it is a masculine noun. The adjective большой describes it, so it must also be in the masculine form to match. The -ой ending is a standard masculine adjective ending.
What does the ь (soft sign) do in the middle of большой?
The soft sign ь doesn't make a sound of its own. Instead, it softens the consonant right before it. In большой, it tells you to pronounce the л softly, making the middle of your tongue rise toward the roof of your mouth.
How do we know it means 'The airport' rather than 'An airport'?
Russian doesn't have articles like 'a', 'an', or 'the'. You have to figure it out from the context. Since we are describing the size of a specific place we are talking about, 'The airport' is the most natural translation into English.
