Why is it года and not год?
After the numbers 2, 3, and 4 in Russian, you must use the genitive singular form of the noun. The dictionary form of the word for year is год, and its genitive singular form is года.
The English translation says 'I have been working,' but работаю is just present tense. Why?
In Russian, if you started doing something in the past and are still doing it right now, you use the present tense. English says 'have been working', but Russian keeps it simple: since you are still working there today, you use the present tense работаю.
Where is the word for 'for' in the Russian sentence?
You do not need one! To say how long an action lasts, Russian simply uses the time phrase directly without a preposition. The phrase два года by itself covers the meaning of 'for two years' here.
Does the word два change depending on what we are counting?
Yes! два is used for counting masculine and neuter nouns. Because год (year) is a masculine noun, we use два. If we were counting a feminine noun, we would use the feminine form две.
