Shouldn't конфеты be in the Accusative case here, since it is the direct object of the verb?
Yes, it is in the Accusative case! For inanimate nouns (things, not people or animals), the plural Accusative form is exactly the same as the plural Nominative form. Since you just learned the Nominative plural конфеты, you get the Accusative plural for free!
Why is очень placed before the verb? In English we put "very much" at the end of the sentence.
In Russian, adverbs like очень (very / very much) usually go right before the word they describe or emphasize. So instead of putting it at the end of the sentence, Russians say очень любим (literally "very love").
Why does the verb любим end in -им instead of -ем?
Любим is the "we" (мы) form of the verb любить (to love). It belongs to the second conjugation group (Type II verbs), which use -и- in their endings (like -ишь, -им, -ите). If it were a Type I verb, it would end in -ем.
