Questions & Answers about А ваш фильм хороший?
Why does this sentence use А instead of И for 'And'?
In Russian, а is often used when asking a follow-up question or shifting the focus slightly, almost like saying 'And what about...'. If you used и, it would sound more like adding items to a list. Here, the speaker is asking about your movie in contrast to something they were just discussing.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In the present tense, Russian drops the verb 'to be' (am, is, are). You simply place the subject (ваш фильм) and its describing word (хороший) together. The 'is' is automatically understood!
Why do we use the forms ваш and хороший?
Words that describe a noun must match its gender. The noun фильм is masculine because it ends in a consonant. Therefore, we use the masculine form for 'your' (ваш) and the masculine form for 'good' (хороший).
How would I change this to ask 'And is this movie good?' instead of 'your' movie?
You would replace the possessive pronoun ваш with the masculine demonstrative pronoun этот, making it: А этот фильм хороший? Because фильм is masculine, you must use этот rather than the feminine эта or the neuter это.
