Evaluating a Resort
When reviewing a hotel or resort, you often need to break down your experience into different categories, such as the location (расположение) or the cleanliness (чистота).
| The hotel has a magnificent location. | У отеля великолепное расположение. |
| Cleanliness in the rooms is acceptable, but the interior is old. | Чистота в комнатах приемлемая, но интерьер старый. |
Shifting the Topic: "Что касается ..., то ..."
To smoothly transition from one aspect of your trip to another, use the construction что касается ..., то ... (as for ..., [then] ...).
- Что касается requires the noun that follows it to be in the Genitive case.
- Always place a comma before то, which introduces your comment or evaluation of that new topic.
| As for the service, it was magnificent. | Что касается обслуживания, то оно было великолепным. |
| As for the interior, it was very modern. | Что касается интерьера, то он был очень современным. |
Notice how the neuter noun обслуживание becomes обслуживания and the masculine noun интерьер becomes интерьера.
Plurals and Connectors
This grammar construction works exactly the same way with plural nouns. For example, if you want to shift the topic to the available entertainment (развлечения), use the Genitive plural (развлечений).
| As for entertainment, there is a lot of it here. | Что касается развлечений, то их здесь много. |
When giving detailed feedback, you will often pair this topic-shifting structure with other connecting phrases to add extra information or contrast.
| As for the staff, they are very polite, moreover, they work quickly. | Что касается персонала, то он очень вежливый, к тому же работает быстро. |
| As for the service, we still didn't like it. | Что касается обслуживания, то оно нам всё же не понравилось. |
