Colloquial vocative (Мам!, Саш!)

The Colloquial Vocative

When calling out to family members or close friends—especially to grab their attention quickly—Russians often use a shortened form of their name or title known as the colloquial vocative.

To form it, drop the final -а or -я from a kinship term or short first name. If the word ends in -я, replace it with a soft sign (-ь) to keep the preceding consonant soft.

  • мама becomes мам
  • Саша becomes Саш
  • Таня becomes Тань

This form is strictly informal. Use it for everyday favors, casual commands, or getting someone's attention:

Mom, where is the rag? I spilled the water!
Мам, где тряпка? Я пролил воду!

More Names and Kinship Terms

This simple rule works for almost any common diminutive name or family title ending in -а or -я. Dropping the final vowel makes your request feel immediate, natural, and highly casual.

  • Дима becomes Дим
  • Маша becomes Маш
  • Катя becomes Кать
  • папа becomes пап

Notice how the vocative easily pairs with commands and requests in everyday family interactions:
