Questions & Answers about Ești româncă?
Why is there no word for "you" in this sentence?
In Romanian, you don't always need to use subject pronouns like tu (you) because the verb form already tells us who is the subject. Ești specifically means "you are", so adding tu is optional and usually left out unless you want to add emphasis.
Does româncă mean the person being asked is female?
Why isn't there a word for "a" like in "Are you a Romanian"?
In English, we often use "a" or "an" with nationalities and professions. In Romanian, you generally drop the words for "a" or "an" (un or o) when stating someone's nationality or job directly after the verb to be (a fi).
How do we know this is a question if the words aren't rearranged?
Romanian doesn't swap the word order to make a question like English does (changing "You are" to "Are you"). Instead, the word order stays exactly the same as a regular statement. You just use a rising tone of voice at the end when speaking, or a question mark when writing.
