An Alternative for Unfulfilled Past Actions

In the previous lesson, you learned to express "should have" and "could have" using the perfect conditional (ar fi trebuit / ar fi putut). Now, we will look at an advanced, yet very common alternative: using the imperfect form of the modal verb followed by the past subjunctive.

Expressing "Should Have" (trebuia să fi)

To build this alternative structure for things that should have happened, use the imperfect form trebuia followed by the past subjunctive.

The past subjunctive is incredibly simple: it is identical for every person! It is always formed with să fi plus the past participle of the main action verb.

Since trebuia is impersonal and the past subjunctive doesn't change, the entire verb block remains exactly the same whether it's "I", "you", or "they" doing the action.

Expressing "Could Have" (putea să fi)

To express what someone "could have" done, use the imperfect form of a putea (to be able to), followed by the same fixed past subjunctive (să fi + past participle).

Unlike trebuia, the imperfect form of a putea does change depending on who is doing the action (eu puteam, tu puteai, el/ea putea, noi puteam, voi puteați, ei/ele puteau).

Negation in the Past Subjunctive

To say someone should not have done something, you usually negate the past subjunctive itself by placing nu right after să (creating să nu fi).
