Telling a good story—whether it's an epic adventure or just recounting a stressful move to a new apartment—requires clear sequencing. In this lesson, you will learn a set of adverbial time locutions (fixed phrases) to help you structure narratives from beginning to end.
Starting the Story: "Inițial"
When describing how a process began or your first impressions of it, use inițial (initially). Moving house is a perfect example of a situation where your initial expectations might change!
Before we look at an example, let's introduce some key vocabulary for moving: the verb a împacheta (to pack) and the adjective epuizant (exhausting).
| Initially, we thought it was easy to pack, but it was exhausting. | Inițial am crezut că e ușor să împachetăm, dar a fost epuizant. |
Turning Points: "La un moment dat" and "Pe parcurs"
As your narrative progresses, you will often need to describe things that happen "along the way" or specific turning points.
- pe parcurs: along the way / during the process
- la un moment dat: at some point / at a given moment
These two expressions are incredibly common in spoken Romanian when recounting a memory or a realization.
| At some point, along the way, we realized the difficulty of the situation. | La un moment dat, pe parcurs, ne-am dat seama de dificultatea situației. |
You can also use la un moment dat to ask questions about future steps in a process:
| At some point, could you bring the truck here? | La un moment dat, ați putea să aduceți camionul aici? |
The Resolution: "În cele din urmă"
To bring your story to a close, use în cele din urmă. Literally translating to something like "in those from the end," this is the standard Romanian phrase for "eventually" or "finally."
Let's combine this with the noun camionul (the truck) to describe finishing a tough task:
| We packed the furniture and eventually put it in the truck. | Am împachetat mobila și în cele din urmă am pus-o în camion. |
Once the packing is done and the truck has arrived, you can move on to the opposite action: a despacheta (to unpack). Reaching this stage usually brings a well-deserved sense of relief (ușurarea).
| The packing was exhausting, but eventually we felt a great relief. | Împachetarea a fost epuizantă, dar în cele din urmă am simțit o mare ușurare. |
| Could you unpack the things after the truck arrives? | Ați putea să despachetați lucrurile după ce ajunge camionul? |
