Subtitles and Dubbing
Watching shows in the digital age means having choices. One of the first decisions you make when starting a foreign series is whether to turn on the subtitles (subtitrarea) or to watch a dubbed (dublat) version.
| I prefer to watch the series with subtitles. | Prefer să mă uit la serial cu subtitrare. |
| I don't like dubbed films either. | Nici mie nu îmi plac filmele dublate. |
Avoiding Spoilers
If you are behind on a popular series, you have to navigate the internet carefully to avoid ruining the plot. Romanian has adopted the English word "spoiler" directly (spoilerul). If you already know what happens, be careful not to reveal (a dezvălui) the ending to others!
| I hate spoilers because they ruin the episode. | Urăsc spoilerele pentru că distrug episodul. |
| Do not reveal the ending to the one who hasn't watched! | Nu dezvălui sfârșitul celui care nu s-a uitat! |
Binge-Watching and Playback
When you find a great show, it is hard to stop. While English uses the phrase "binge-watching," in Romanian you can describe watching multiple episodes continuously (încontinuu). If you do need to take a break, you can pause the show and resume (a relua) it later.
| She watched three seasons non-stop over the weekend. | Ea a urmărit trei sezoane încontinuu în weekend. |
| We will resume the film after dinner. | O să reluăm filmul după cină. |
Taking Control
To save time during your TV marathon, you might want to skip the intro (introducerea). But to do that, you first need to figure out where you put the remote control (telecomanda)!
| I always skip the intro to save time. | Sar mereu peste introducere ca să câștig timp. |
| The remote fell under the couch. | Telecomanda a căzut sub canapea. |
Hooked on Exclusive Content
Streaming platforms try to draw you in with exclusive (exclusiv) content that you cannot watch anywhere else. Sometimes, a really well-made series can even cause a funny kind of "addiction" (dependență).
| I bought a subscription for the exclusive content. | Am cumpărat un abonament pentru conținutul exclusiv. |
| This excellent series causes addiction. | Acest serial excelent provoacă dependență. |
