Singular commands for -ea and -e verbs

For verbs ending in -ea (Conjugation 2) and -e (Conjugation 3), forming the singular command (imperative) usually depends on whether the verb takes a direct object:

  • Transitive verbs (actions done to an object, like pulling or stopping something) use the present tense "he/she" (el / ea) form. This is the same rule you learned for most other verbs.
  • Intransitive verbs (actions that do not take a direct object, like going or staying) use the present tense "you" (tu) form.
  • Irregular verbs like a face (to do) and a avea (to have) have short, unique command forms.

Fast Action and Warnings

When giving emergency advice or urgent warnings, use these short commands to direct someone's movement or behavior quickly:

Go outside quickly!
Mergi repede afară!
Do something urgently, there is a danger!
Fă ceva urgent, este un pericol!
Be quiet and listen!
Taci și ascultă!
Put out the fire immediately!
Stinge focul imediat!

Moving Objects

During a fast-paced situation, you will often need transitive verbs to tell someone to push, pull, or hold objects:

Pull the door quickly!
Trage ușa repede!
Push the car into the garage!
Împinge mașina în garaj!
Hold the door open!
Ține ușa deschisă!

Being Careful

The irregular command Ai! is almost always used in the set phrase Ai grijă! (Be careful! / Take care!). Notice how it pairs with other commands to ensure safety:

Stay here and be careful!
Rămâi aici și ai grijă!
Be careful, the fire is big!
Ai grijă, focul este mare!
