Relaxing on the Sand
Today we are heading to the beach! A perfect day starts with claiming your spot on șezlongul (the sun lounger).
| The woman is going to stay on this sun lounger all day. | Femeia o să stea pe acest șezlong toată ziua. |
Once settled, it is time to work on that summer glow. The verb se bronza (to get a tan) is reflexive, meaning you will use reflexive pronouns like se for "he/she" or "they".
When describing two alternatives, such as relaxing versus swimming, you can use the pairing fie..., fie... (either..., or...).
| She is either getting a tan, or she is swimming in the sea. | Ea fie se bronzează, fie înoată în mare. |
Beach Safety
While relaxing, it is important to stay safe under the sun and in the water. Make sure salvamarul (the lifeguard) is on duty, and apply lotion to avoid arsura (the burn / sunburn).
Sometimes you might wonder if an action has already occurred. In Romanian, you can use the presumptive mood to express a guess or a possibility. To say someone "might have" done something, use o fi followed by the past participle of the verb (like plecat for left).
| Did the lifeguard already leave? He might have left. | Salvamarul a și plecat? O fi plecat. |
| Unfortunately, the sunburn hurts very much. | Din păcate, arsura de soare doare foarte tare. |
For children learning to swim safely in the waves, colacul (the swimming ring) is a great tool.
| The child is going to use that swimming ring. | Copilul o să folosească acel colac. |
In the Water and on the Shore
The waves can be tricky, so you must be careful not to se îneca (to drown). You can give a warning or express a strong negative command using să nu followed by the subjunctive form of the verb.
| Careful, do not drown in the waves! | Atenție, să nu te îneci în valuri! |
Back on the sand, a favorite beach activity is collecting treasures like scoica (the seashell). You can use the adjective fiecare to mean "every" or "each" before a singular noun.
| The little boy wants to collect every seashell from the beach. | Băiețelul vrea să adune fiecare scoică de pe plajă. |
The Seaside Experience
To talk about the whole coastal region, use the word litoralul (the seaside).
When you want to exclaim how beautiful, crowded, or pleasant something is, start your sentence with Ce (What / How), followed directly by the descriptive adjective.
| How beautiful the seaside is here! | Ce frumos este litoralul aici! |
