The Basics of Car Rentals
When you plan a road trip, the first step is to rent (a închiria) a vehicle.
If you are discussing different rental packages, you might need to contrast two options. To say "not this, but that," Romanian uses the word ci for "but" in negative corrections.
Emphasizing the Object
In Romanian, if you want to strongly emphasize the object of your sentence (like the car or the fee), you can move it to the very beginning. When you do this, you must also include a short object pronoun right before or attached to the verb to refer back to it. For feminine singular nouns like mașina (the car), you attach -o ("it") to the end of a past tense verb.
Fees and Deductibles
Renting a car often involves extra costs, such as adding an additional (suplimentar) driver. In case of an accident, you will also need to know the amount for the deductible (franciza).
Notice how the emphasis structure from earlier works with other feminine nouns, like franciza, when moved to the front of the sentence:
Inspections and Damages
Before driving away, you will complete the inspection (inspecția). This is the time to check if there is any serious mechanical damage (avaria) or just a minor scratch (o zgârietură).
Insurance, Waivers, and Wear
Standard rentals usually exhibit minor wear and tear (uzura). To protect yourself from unexpected costs, you can add optional (opțional) protections, such as choosing a liability waiver (exonerarea) instead of standard insurance.
