Absolute Superlatives
In Romanian, when you want to express that a quality is at its absolute highest degree (like saying something is "extremely" or "incredibly" a certain way), you do not always have to rely on adverbs like foarte (very). Instead, you can attach a prefix directly to the front of the adjective to create a single, intensified word.
The most common superlative prefixes are super-, extra-, and ultra-. They are perfect for describing the larger-than-life worlds of a comic book (banda desenată), a superhero (supereroul), or a villain (răufăcătorul).
The Prefix super-
Just like in English, the prefix super- means above or beyond. When attached to an adjective, it is written as one continuous word without a hyphen.
Adjective Agreement
When you add a prefix to an adjective, it still functions exactly like a normal adjective. This means it must change its ending to agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies, whether you are talking about a superpower or a costume (costumația) at a convention (convenția).
The prefix extra- works identically to super-, elevating a trait to an exceptional level. Notice how the new compound adjective alters its ending to match a feminine noun like superputerea (the superpower).
The Prefix ultra-
Finally, ultra- emphasizes that something is taken to the absolute extreme limit. Words like ultrasecret (ultrasecret) and ultramodern (ultramodern) follow the exact same spelling and agreement rules we have just covered.
