Meet the Family: The "-eștii" Suffix
In English, we refer to an entire family unit by making their surname plural and adding "the" (like "The Smiths").
In Romanian, many common surnames end in -escu. To refer to the whole family, change this suffix to the plural -ești, then add the masculine definite plural article -i. The result is the suffix -eștii.
For example, the surname Popescu becomes Popeștii (The Popescus).
| The Popescus are hosting the reunion this year. | Popeștii găzduiesc reuniunea anul acesta. |
This pattern applies to any surname ending in -escu. Ionescu becomes Ioneștii, Vasilescu becomes Vasileștii, and Dumitrescu becomes Dumitreștii.
| If only the Ionescus would arrive on time for the reunion! | Măcar să ajungă Ioneștii la timp pentru reuniune! |
| The Vasilescus had an old rivalry with the clan. | Vasileștii aveau o rivalitate veche cu clanul. |
| Maria asked if the Dumitrescus want reconciliation. | Maria a întrebat dacă Dumitreștii vor împăcarea. |
Discussing Family Ties
To say that families or people are related to each other, use the reflexive verb a se înrudi (to be related). Because it indicates a mutual relationship, it is typically followed by the preposition cu (with).
| The Vasilescus are related to the Ionescus now. | Vasileștii se înrudesc cu Ioneștii acum. |
| Some are related to the Popescus, others are not. | Unii se înrudesc cu Popeștii, alții nu. |
