Plural Negative Commands
When giving a negative command to a group of people (or to a single person formally), Romanian keeps things simple. Unlike the singular negative command which requires the bare infinitive, the plural negative command simply places nu before the regular second-person plural form of the verb.
| Infinitive | Plural Form | Negative Command | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| a hrăni | hrăniți | Nu hrăniți! | Do not feed! |
| a părăsi | părăsiți | Nu părăsiți! | Do not leave! |
| a aprinde | aprindeți | Nu aprindeți! | Do not light! |
Here is how a guide might instruct tourists in a nature reserve:
| Welcome to our reserve. Do not feed the wild animals! | Bine ați venit în rezervația noastră. Nu hrăniți animalele sălbatice! |
| Do not leave the path! | Nu părăsiți poteca! |
| Do not light a fire here, it is dangerous. | Nu aprindeți focul aici, este periculos. |
Direct Object Pronouns
When replacing a noun with a direct object pronoun (like "it" or "them"), the short-form pronoun goes between nu and the verb.
If the pronoun begins with a vowel, like îl (masculine/neuter singular "it"), it attaches directly to nu with a hyphen to become nu-l. If the pronoun begins with a consonant, like le (feminine/neuter plural "them"), it stands alone as a separate word.
| The sign is important. Do not ignore it! | Indicatorul este important. Nu-l ignorați! |
| You can observe the animals, but do not feed them. | Puteți să observați animalele, dar nu le hrăniți. |
