Daily Dental Routine
Let's talk about oral care! You will start by learning the word for hygiene (igiena) and the adjective dental (dentar). Remember that adjectives in Romanian usually follow the noun and match its gender and number.

Enamel and Floss
To keep your teeth healthy, you want to protect the enamel (smalțul). Notice the definite article -ul attached to the end of this neuter noun.
| I clean my teeth carefully to protect the enamel. | Îmi curăț dinții cu atenție ca să protejez smalțul. |
You will also need the word for thread (ața), which pairs with dentară to mean dental floss.
| We use dental floss before we wash our teeth. | Folosim ața dentară înainte să ne spălăm pe dinți. |
Brushing and Tartar
Next up is the brushing (periajul). If you skip this step, you might end up with tartar (tartrul). Both of these are neuter nouns taking the definite article -ul.
| It is important to use dental floss after the evening brushing. | Este important să folosești ața dentară după periajul de seară. |
| If you avoid brushing, tartar gathers quickly between your teeth. | Dacă eviți periajul, tartrul se adună repede între dinți. |
The Dentist and Your Breath
When things go wrong, you have to visit the dentist (stomatologul). Because the dentist is a specific person acting as a direct object, we use the preposition pe before the noun, along with the matching object pronoun îl.
| You brush your teeth before you visit the dentist. | Te speli pe dinți înainte să îl vizitezi pe stomatolog. |
You also want to make sure your breath (respirația) is fresh before stepping out! Since it ends in a vowel, its definite form takes the -a suffix.
| She checks her breath before she greets her colleague. | Ea își verifică respirația înainte să îl salute pe colegul său. |
Fluoride
Finally, let's round out your routine with fluoride (fluorul). You will often see it used with the preposition cu (with) when shopping for toothpaste.
| We buy ourselves fluoride toothpaste for our hygiene. | Ne cumpărăm pastă de dinți cu fluor pentru igiena noastră. |
