The Negative Gerund
In Romanian, the gerund (equivalent to English "-ing" words used to show background actions) ends in -ând or -ind. To express a lack of action or a missing state, simply attach the prefix ne- to the beginning of the gerund.
For example, știind (knowing) and având (having) become:
- neștiind (not knowing)
- neavând (not having)
| Why is the suspect silent during the interrogation, not knowing the truth? | De ce tace suspectul în timpul interogatoriului, neștiind adevărul? |
Romanian uses double negatives. When using a negative gerund with "any", use the negative forms niciun (masculine/neuter) or nicio (feminine).
| Not having any alibi, the man must remain in custody. | Neavând niciun alibi, omul trebuie să rămână în arest. |
Not Being
The verb a fi (to be) becomes fiind in the gerund. Add the prefix to get nefiind (not being).
| Not being guilty, the suspect wants to explain the alibi. | Nefiind vinovat, suspectul vrea să explice alibiul. |
More Negative Gerunds in Action
The ne- prefix works consistently across all verbs, such as neînțelegând (not understanding), neputând (not being able to), or necomițând (not committing).
| Not understanding any question, the innocent suspect remained silent. | Neînțelegând nicio întrebare, suspectul nevinovat a tăcut. |
| The judge released that man, not being able to prove the crime. | Judecătoarea l-a eliberat pe acel om, neputând dovedi crima. |
| Not committing the crime, he remained calm during the interrogation. | Necomițând crima, el a rămas calm în timpul interogatoriului. |
