Mixed Unreal Conditionals

Sometimes, a hypothetical choice in the past affects our situation right now. When talking about relocation or how past choices shape your current life, we often mix timeframes. In English, we say things like: "If I had received the visa [past], I would have citizenship now [present]."

In Romanian, the sentence structure reflects this timeline perfectly. You use the Past Conditional in the dacă (if) clause, and the Present Conditional in the result clause.

If I had received the visa, I would have the citizenship now.
Dacă aș fi primit viza, aș avea cetățenia acum.
If she hadn't hesitated, she would emigrate today.
Dacă ea nu ar fi ezitat, ar emigra astăzi.

Reflexive Verbs in Mixed Sentences

When discussing expat life, you will frequently use reflexive verbs like a se stabili (to settle down), a se adapta (to adapt), and a se integra (to integrate).

Reflexive pronouns contract with the conditional auxiliary in both clauses. Notice how the past conditional side uses the full past structure (contracted auxiliary + fi + past participle), while the present conditional side uses only the contracted auxiliary and the infinitive verb.

If we had studied the culture, we would integrate easily.
Dacă am fi studiat cultura, ne-am integra ușor.
If they had settled down here, they would ask for the citizenship.
Dacă s-ar fi stabilit aici, ar cere cetățenia.

Adding Emphasis with "Chiar dacă"

To say "even if" to emphasize a hypothetical scenario, simply add chiar before dacă. The rules for mixing the conditional tenses remain exactly the same.

Even if he had had the desire, he wouldn't emigrate without us.
Chiar dacă ar fi avut dorința, el nu ar emigra fără noi.
