Independent relative pronoun (cine)

Cine as "Whoever"

You already know cine as the question word for "who". However, it can also be used to connect ideas, meaning "whoever" or "the person who".

When used this way, cine acts as an independent relative pronoun. This means it stands completely on its own, without referring back to a specific noun in the sentence.

Whoever has time helps the community.
Cine are timp ajută comunitatea.
Whoever goes to the orphanage donates some toys.
Cine merge la orfelinat donează niște jucării.

Cine in the Middle of a Sentence

The cine clause does not have to be at the beginning of the sentence. It can follow conjunctions like că (that), or act as the object of the main sentence.

He knows that whoever gets involved in volunteering does a good deed.
El știe că cine se implică în voluntariat face o faptă bună.

If the "whoever" clause acts as a direct human object, remember to use the personal object marker pe before cine.

The doctor helps whoever is sick.
Medicul îl ajută pe cine este bolnav.

Volunteering and Charity

Because cine is great for expressing general truths and principles, it is perfect for discussing volunteering (voluntariatul), solidarity (solidaritatea), and charity (caritatea).

Whoever wants to help goes to the nursing home.
Cine vrea să ajute merge la azil.
Whoever understands suffering appreciates charity and solidarity.
Cine înțelege suferința apreciază caritatea și solidaritatea.
