In English, you often use the passive voice for actions directed at someone, such as "I am told," "You are given," or "We are asked." Romanian handles this by combining an impersonal reflexive verb (using se) with a Dative indirect object pronoun.
Literally, the construction translates to "It tells itself to me" or "It is offered to you."
First and Second Person
To build these impersonal phrases, place the unstressed Dative pronoun (like mi or ți) directly before the reflexive pronoun se, followed by the main verb in the third person.
Third Person and Dative Nouns
For the third person, use the Dative pronouns i (to him/her) and li (to them).
If you want to specify exactly who is receiving the action, use a noun with the Dative definite article (such as -lui for masculine nouns like eroului, or -ei for feminine nouns like zânei). As is standard in Romanian, you must still include the matching unstressed pronoun (i or li) right before se.
Plural Pronouns
For "us" and "you all", use the Dative pronouns ni and vi before the reflexive se.
Impressions and "Seeming"
This same structure is heavily used with the verb a părea (to seem) to express impressions or opinions. Translating literally to "It seems to you" or "It seems to them," it is the standard Romanian way to say "Do you think that...?" or "They feel like..."
