Saying hello
Romanian greetings follow the time of day. They are fixed phrases: learn each one whole.
| greeting | when |
|---|---|
| bună dimineața | in the morning |
| bună ziua | during the day — the safe, polite default |
| bună seara | in the evening |
| noapte bună | only when leaving at night or going to bed |
| Good day, sir! | Bună ziua, domnule! |
| Good morning, Mom! | Bună dimineața, mamă! |
| Good evening, professor! | Bună seara, domnule profesor! |
With friends and family, say bună or salut (both hi). Use them only with people you would call tu.
| Hi! I am the new student. | Salut! Eu sunt studentul nou. |
How are you?
Ce mai faci? is the friendly how are you? — literally what are you still doing? Answer with bine (well).
| Hi! How are you? | Bună! Ce mai faci? |
Saying goodbye
La revedere (literally until seeing again) is the polite goodbye. With friends, pa is enough, and salut works for goodbye too.
| Goodbye, sir! | La revedere, domnule! |
| Bye, Mom! | Pa, mamă! |
| Good night, children! | Noapte bună, copii! |
Notice the endings on domnule, mamă and prietene: Romanian has a special form for calling to someone directly. For now, just recognise it.
