Hair Styling and Grooming

Hair Care and Problems

Let's look at some common hair problems, such as a dry scalp (scalpul) or dandruff (mătreața).

To express that a condition is changing progressively (meaning "more and more" or "increasingly"), Romanian uses the phrases din ce în ce mai or tot mai followed by an adjective or adverb.

I see that your scalp has more and more dandruff.
The ends of your hair are getting more and more split.
Vârfurile părului tău sunt tot mai despicate.

If you need a trim, you might have to deal with hair ends that are split (despicat).

I see she cuts every split end with the scissors.
Văd că taie fiecare vârf despicat cu foarfeca.

Barber Tools

When visiting the barber, you will encounter specific grooming tools. A comb is pieptenele and a straight razor is briciul.

The barber cleans the straight razor and the comb after each client.
I feel that the barber is cutting my beard with the straight razor.
Simt că frizerul îmi taie barba cu briciul.

Styling and Updos

For keeping a hairstyle in place, you might use gel (gelul) or hairspray (fixativul). These are especially useful if you are styling your hair into a bun (cocul).

She applies hairspray to keep the hairstyle.
Aplică fixativ ca să păstreze coafura.
For this bun, you need gel and a little hairspray.

Hair Textures

Hair can be naturally textured or styled into different shapes, whether it is curly (creț) or just wavy (ondulat).

Notice how we can again use tot mai and din ce în ce mai to describe hair that is progressively becoming curlier or wavier.

The boy has more and more curly hair.
Băiatul are părul tot mai creț.
Her hair is not curly, but just a bit wavy.
I see in the mirror that my hair is more and more wavy.
