Expressing Duration with timp de
When you want to state how long an action or event lasted, English typically uses the word "for" (as in "for three years"). Romanian expresses this enclosed duration using the phrase timp de (literally, "time of") followed by the period of time.
| She studied English for three years. | Ea a studiat engleza timp de trei ani. |
| We lived here for two months. | Am locuit aici timp de două luni. |
Careers and Roles
Use timp de to talk about professional experience, such as time spent at an agency (agenție), an internship (stagiu), or holding a specific position (funcție).
| I worked at this agency for five years. |
| I did the internship at the hospital for a month. |
| He kept this position for ten years. |
Living Arrangements and Studies
Use the same structure to describe how long you lived in a neighborhood (cartier) or paid rent (chirie).
| We lived in the same neighborhood for six months. |
| We paid the rent for a year. | Am plătit chiria timp de un an. |
It also works for time spent in education, like staying in a university dorm (cămin), measuring time in semesters (semestre), or years spent at a high school (liceu).
| The student stayed in the dorm for two semesters. |
| They were classmates at high school for four years. |
